The Japanese word, Shuhari, is a famous word when people want to master something. There are three stages of mastery: the fundamentals(“Shu”), breaking with tradition(“Ha”), and creating one’s own techniques(“Ri”).
This word came from the green tea world, but it uses in each situation when people try to do new things.
Before going to the US, I didn’t like this word so much just because many people want to use this word. However, after I came to the US and started to use English frequently, I find the sensitivity and beauty of some Japanese words.
The importance of “Shu”
I think the concept of “Shu” is crucial. People including me tend to think about advancement; however, basics beat everything.
In the past, I tried to do new things. To be sure, some projects I joined succeeded. But these were luck. Considering continuous success, we have to master fundamentals.
I forgot the concept of “Shu” when I study new concepts in English. I thought I needed to use only English when I learned new things. Nonetheless, it is difficult because I am already a grown-up so I got the basics of Japanese.
What I need to do is to use Japanese when some troubles happen. Japanese lectures and textbooks are beneficial to get basics. After that, I’m going to speak and write new concepts in English.
Thinking about “Ha” and “Ri”
These concepts seem to be important after people get some basics. Professors try to find their own ways, but they studied their fields for at least several years, master’s and doctor’s processes.
Thinking about my case, I am definitely in the process of “Shu”. Therefore, I learn new concepts and try to use them freely as possible for these two years.
Firstly, I just want to use English freely in academic, business, and daily conversations. And then, I want to find my solutions to the relationship between aging societies and communities to decide my way of life.
